Ljubljana
Days 1-3
Your trip will begin in Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, which is also the most populated city in Slovenia. Since the population is under 300,000 Ljubljana has a charming small town feel even though it is the largest city in Slovenia. The Ljubljanica River winds through the city center creating a beautiful promenade with riverside restaurants, bars and cafes. Ljubljana Castle is situated on a hill above the river and a visit is a must if even just for the beautiful views over Ljubljana.
Make sure to grab a beer or attend a concert at the cultural center of Metelkova Mesto, where artists from around the world have turned the exterior of seven buildings into a collage of artwork. Another region to stroll through is the vibrant Central Market region, where you can buy traditional Slovenian produce, alcohol, and goods. The most popular lakes, caves mountains, vineyards, and beaches in Slovenia are all under a two-hour drive from Ljubljana so if you prefer to get out of the city for a day the possibilities are endless.
Lake Bled
Days 4-5
Your next stop will be Lake Bled. A picturesque lake with an Old Gothic church on an island in the middle of the lake. Lake Bled truly looks like something out of a fairy tale and a day spent walking or cycling around the lake will not leave you disappointed. You can take short hikes up to Mala Osojnica, Ojstrica or Bled Castle, which provide scenic viewpoints overlooking Lake Bled or simply relax by the cool water at various lakeside restaurants.
If you prefer to visit the church in the center of the lake there are numerous kayak rental or boat rental options. Before you leave the Lake Bled area a visit to Vintgar Gorge is a must. The unique trail through the gorge traverses across rocky paths and wooden bridges, which cross back and forth over the roaring Radovna River.
Lake Bohinj and Triglav
Days 6 - 7
Lake Bohinj is the largest glacial lake in Slovenia and is located in the Triglav National Park. While most people have heard of Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj is less well known but equally as beautiful as it is surrounded by the majestic Julian Alps. Walking or cycling around the lake is popular as is kayaking on the lake, but many people choose to use Lake Bohinj as a base for exploring the rest of Triglav National Park. Some consider Lake Bohinj to be hiking heaven because so many of the top trails leading into the Julian Alps begin nearby, including the very popular seven lakes valley hike.
If you just prefer to enjoy the views without hiking Lake Bohinj also has a cable car that will bring you nearly 3,000 feet above the lake. Day trip excursions from the Lake Bohinj area are numerous and include visits to beautiful mountain churches like Cerkev SV Duha na Javorci, a hike through the Tolmin Gorges, hikes to several waterfalls or visits to farms where tourists can learn about Slovenian farming, beekeeping, food, alcohol and more.
Brda and Vipava Region
Days 8 - 9
After visiting the area around Triglav National Park, head south to the Brda region nicknamed “The Tuscany of Slovenia.” Set along the Italian border in the western part of Slovenia, you will find beautiful rolling hills, vineyards set atop steep slopes, and medieval villages. The region is known best for its Rebula wine, but they also produce many other varieties of red and white wines.
Not far from the Brda region is the Vipava region, which is well known for their use of natural farming and traditional wine production methods. As most of the vineyards are smaller, the Vipava region provides visitors with a very personal experience. Often during tastings, the winemakers themselves guide the tours for visitors and explain the wines that they proudly produce.
Along the Vipava Valley Wine Road, the local farms also offer visitors authentic dishes to compliment the tasty wines of the region. Both the Brda region and the Vipava region should be on your itinerary if you are a wine lover or simply want to visit a part of Slovenia that still embraces its history, culture, and traditions.
Skocjan, Postojna, and Predjama
Day 10
Make the most of your last day in Slovenia by visiting some of Europe’s biggest caves, Postojna Cave Park, and Skocjan Caves. The Skocjan Caves boast the largest discovered underground chamber in Europe and several waterfalls, which can be viewed from the walkways and bridges that have been built throughout the cave complex.
Postojna cave is the most visited cave in Europe and second largest cave complex in Slovenia. Once inside the cave, you can see a 50 foot tall stalagmite known as the Skyscraper and the rare creature named the human fish. Postojna is also home of the largest cave castle in the world, Predjama Castle. For a different type of caving experience, a visit to Krizna Jama can be added to the itinerary. At Krizna Jama visitors can go on cave boating tours to cross over thirteen of the twenty-two lakes located inside of the cave.
